As part of the new General Local Plan, where Tirana is envisioned as a polycentric city, the Municipality of Tirana has selected a group of 3 students from the Graduate School of Design of Harvard University, who in collaboration with architecture students from Epoka University, Polis University and Polytechnic University of Tirana, are working on three projects that will be implemented in the city.
The first project is that of a central plan along the New Boulevard, a green space, six times larger than “Rinia Park”, which will be the new lung of Tirana. The second project is related to Tirana as Polycentric city, particularly with the revitalization of Kombinat zone. The third project aims at transforming the project of Tirana’s facades from an ad-hoc project, to a long-term project where different strategies such as transformation of Tirana into a European Capital of Culture, into a capital where urban art blooms and develops, etc. are involved. The students of Epoka University Vilma Picari, Silvia Azizaj and Gilserena Mirashi are part of these projects respectively.
A preliminary presentation of the ideas, strategies and vision of the projects was held on July 11, 2017, in the premises of Piramida, where Mr. Erion Veliaj, the mayor of the Municipality of Tirana, was present and shared his enthusiasm for the soonest materialization of these project ideas into concrete projects.
The U.S. Embassy in Tirana, also expressed great interest, requesting a meeting with these students, appreciating the cooperation between the United States and Albania. This meeting was held on Thursday, July 6, 2017, at the premisses of the American Embassy, and was hosted by the head of the Public Relations Office, Mr. Ryan Roberts. A discussion for the vision of the three projects and the latest urban developments in Tirana was held, and followed by an introduction to the works and activities of the U.S. Embassy in Tirana.
