Open Forum; How the International Human Rights standards should be interpreted and applied

Politics and Diplomacy Club in collaboration with Conflict Resolution Club and International Relation Club, on March 25, 2014 organized the Open Forum which was focused on the International Human Rights standards. The topic of the forum was “How the International Human Rights standards should be interpreted and applied” and was presented by Mrs. Martha Spurrier and Mr. Jonathan Cooper, much respected and well known human rights specialists.

During his presentation Mr. Jonathan Cooper firstly he made an introduction of “What are the Human Rights”? and then he mention three important thing about the human rights which are dignity, accountability and security. Mr. Jonatthan highlighted that human rights are universal, to be guaranteed and to be secure. He noted that without dignity, accountability and security human rights will not exist. After the presentation of where do the human rights come from, mentioning the period after the First World War and then the period after Second World War and the adoption of United Nation Declaration on Human Rights (UNDHR) on 1948. In his presentation he also mentions Albania which after the communism collapse become part of all the Human Rights convents. Also he did not let without including in his speech the actual events ongoing in Crimea. As well as he gave some statics of the countries violating the Human Rights. According to Mr. Jonatthan the higher percentage was leaded by Russia, Italy, UK, and Turkey mainly. He stated that one of the successful Human Rights implemented institution is European Court of Human Rights.

Mrs. Martha Spurrier in her presentation was focused mainly on “women discrimination” issue in Albania. According to Mrs. Spurrier, Albanians should do much more about protecting and giving a higher status to the women. Also she mentioned n Health Care and Rights of family to get together. So as immigration is very fluently in Albania bringing together families is very important.

At the end there was interaction between our guest and many question raised from the participants. There was very lively discussion and our two guests were surprised and very honored by the massive participation and inters on this topic.
