Epoka University in collaboration with “Higher School of Education”, Centre of Democratic Education and the University of Tirana co-organized the 1st Albanian International Conference on Education, which was held on December 7-8, 2012 in Tirana. The Albanian International Conference on Education was organized for the first time in Albania and approximately 160 educators, researchers and lecturers will present their ideas, projects, achievements and problems they face in their everyday work, as well will share best practices and identity common challenges in education.
The Chairman of the Conference Steering Committee, Prof. Dr. Bardhyl Musai welcomed the participants to the conference and stated that this conference has aroused much interest and aims to facilitate dialogue and communication on a variety of education issues. Referring to the centenary of Albania’s independence and to the achievements attained particularly in the education area so far, Prof. Musai stressed the role that the Albanian society as a whole has in order to contribute to the rising of Albania to a “developed country” status.
Speaking at the beginning of the Conference, the Rector of Epoka University, Prof. Dr. Remzi Altın thanked all the participants and stated that Epoka University is happy to participate as a co-organizer of this event that touches upon a very important subject concerning the challenges that education faces with regard to the continuous innovations that stem from the information age. He congratulated the organizers stating that this is a very valuable initiative, Prof. Altın added that the whole society is becoming knowledge-centered. According to Prof. Altın, universities represent universal entities where knowledge is produced and shared with society. “Today`s universities main roles can be defined within the Knowledge Triangle: Education, Research and Innovation. Universities are ranked and selected according to their success in carrying out these duties”, he said.
According to Prof. Altın the challenges such as the increased demand for education and for quality in qualification, the globalization and internationalization process as well as the tremendous development in information technology, are demanding a number of immediate actions by universities such as increasing transparency and accountability, improving links with the business community and society, as well as the matching the skills acquired during universities studies with the labour market requirements. “It is clear to all of us that internal quality assurance systems should be established and operate in an effective way within universities in order to be able to successfully respond to challenges that originate from a continuously changing environment”, Prof. Altın noted.
The proceedings of the Conference were welcomed also by the Albanian Prime Minister, Prof. Dr. Sali Berisha. In his speech addressed to the audience, Mr. Berisha thanked the organizers and stated that this conference has a particular importance for the country. According to Mr. Berisha, opinions and conclusions drawn from this conference will be considered by the Ministry of Education and Science and by the government, and further efforts should be made to consolidate the educational system. He added that the all actors and universities should do everything for the internationalization of the Albanian higher education and the cooperation between universities is one of the most productive strategies.
The Conference aims to facilitate dialogue and communication on a variety of education issues, both in a plenary session and five thematic panel sessions, where professionals of the field will share their experiences and practices through interactive discussions in a highly professional environment. The conference aims to provide a forum for the academia, researchers, educators and teachers, to present their ideas, projects, achievements, and problems they face in their everyday work, as well as to share best practices and identify common challenges in education.
