“100 LAKES – Tirana & Rethinking Water-land” one week workshop, between Master of Science students in Urbanism and Strategic Planning in Catholic University of Leuven (KUL) and Architecture students of Epoka University, organized during February 23 – March 01, 2013, resulted very productive and fruitful for students of both universities. During this one-week workshop: city visits, discussions and brainstorming sessions, consultations with local experts and field trips took place. The students of KUL and Epoka University, working on the "100 Lakes Project" were well-received by the Rector of Epoka University, Prof. Dr. Remzi Altin, the Head of Architecture Department, etc.
During the workshop, Prof. Agim Selenica, expert in Hydrology, Water Resources Management, Advance Hydrology, Hydropower Economy, Industrial Water Management and Reuse, gave a speech and had a discussion with the students on the water resources in Albania, focusing on the reservoirs in Tirana-Durres area. Also the GIS expert of Topocentric, Mr. Lorenc Cala briefly assisted the team on the analysis of GIS data available on this region. In addition, Urim Hoxha, Director of Strategically Project at Tirana Municipality, also gave a brief overview on the important projects that Tirana Municipality is envision to implement, such as the Extension of the Boulevard, an idea project developed through an international competition, won by Grimshaw.
During the 3 day intensive field trips and documentations, part of the workshop, the team of "100 Lakes" visited several Artificial Lakes/Reservoirs, as well as specific sites in both Tirana and Durrës city [such as Kombinati Area, Dajti Mountain, Grand Lake Park, Former Keneta area in Durres, the waterfront, etc]. Interviews were conducted in place, to people who had (technical) knowledge on the reservoirs.
A second meeting [Midterm Review, workshop and field trip] to take place in Tirana is planned in mid April, 2013. The Final Reviews, June 2013, will be in the format of a common presentation of both KUL & Epoka University students.
